Interview with Street Kitty Glass

We carry an assortment of glass at each of our locations and this month we will be highlighting local vendors that we think are the bees knees! The first local artist we are showcasing is Street Kitty Glass! Check out Street Kitty’s website for more information and photos!

*Street Kitty Glass is available at our SODO, Shoreline and Ballard locations only.

How did Street Kitty get started?

I was trained by a production glassworker and I worked as an apprentice for 2 years.

When do you work? Who else is part of your business?

I am an early riser, so I enjoy working during the day alongside my husband, Whitney Harmon who is also a glassblower.

What tools do you use?

I use a GTT Delta torch.

We love the illustrations/etchings you do on your glasswork, do you freehand this? What’s your process?

All carvings are done with a hand dremel.

How has your practice changed over time?

Legalization has helped tremendously.

What is your output like? How long does it take you to make a pipe? A bong? A rig?

Each is different, with prep, and cold work it can range from 30 min to multiple days.

What’s the best book you’ve read in the past year?

The Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel James Brown.

Which other artists are you inspired by?

I very much like outsider artists.

Do you listen to music while you create? If so, what’s been on regular rotation lately?

My favorite to blow glass to is Too Many Zoos. I listen to a lot of podcasts and audio books.

What else inspires you?

Nature, I live in the woods on a lake.

What do you do in your free time?

 Mushroom foraging, fishing, rock hounding.

What’s your spirit animal and/or a superpower you’d love to have?

Time travel.

Do you do custom commissions?

Yes, sometimes.

What’s the craziest piece you’ve ever worked on?

I enjoy sculpting pieces, but they are always the most nerve wracking.

Do you ever offer workshops?

I offer beginner glass blowing experiences through Airbnb.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out in this industry?

When glass breaks learn from your mistakes, you have to develop a relationship with it.

What’s your relationship with cannabis?

It has been a huge part of my life for over 25 years.

What’s your favorite piece(s) we have in our stores at the moment?

My favorite lately are the honeypot pipes. The bees are fun to sculpt.
