How Cannabis Can Help Manage Menopause Symptoms: Q&A With Fairwinds

Are you going through menopause and experiencing troublesome symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances? You’re not alone. Menopause is a natural and inevitable part of life for women, but that doesn’t mean it’s a walk in the park. Fortunately, there are many ways to help manage symptoms, and cannabis has emerged as one of the more promising options. We at Dockside reached out to the experts at Fairwinds Cannabis to help us understand how cannabis can benefit and ease the symptoms of menopause.

Disclaimer: do not use cannabis while pregnant or nursing. While Dockside Cannabis has well-educated staff members and we are proud to employ several state-certified MCCs (medical cannabis consultants), we are not medical professionals. All suggestions are recommended based on anecdotal evidence only, and are not to be considered as prescriptive advice. Keep out of reach of children and store all cannabis products in a secure location.

How can cannabis help women who are going through menopause?

Cannabis can help reduce unpleasant symptoms while protecting the brain and nervous system from the oxidative stress associated with menopause. Oxidative stress is a state that occurs when there is an excess of free radicals in the body’s cells. Oftentimes, the hormone-related changes of menopause will result in a deficiency of oxidative control. One of the ways in which cannabinoids may help is by acting as antioxidants themselves. Research* has shown that cannabinoids such as THC and CBD have antioxidant properties and can reduce the levels of ROS (reactive oxygen species).

Can cannabis help with common menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, mood changes, and insomnia?

Yes, but the results are unique to the individual. It is very effective for some, and minimally effective for others. Cannabinoids are potent antioxidants that bind with receptors in our endocannabinoid (nervous) system and can help regulate menopause symptoms. So while we can’t say how it works yet, we can report that many women use cannabis for menopause symptoms and say it helps.

What should women look for when choosing a cannabis product for menopause symptoms?

It is best to avoid sugars or additives and instead, find pure medicinal products with CBD with other minor cannabinoids, like CBN, CBG, etc. Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) gained a lot a popularity for helping cancer patients. RSO is great, but Full-Spectrum Cannabis Oil (FECO) is even better, as the extraction process used to make it preserves more of the beneficial organic compounds— similar to juicing the entire plant.

Are there any specific cannabinoids or products that are particularly effective for menopause symptoms?

A blend of cannabinoids is ideal. Cannabinoids are the chemical compounds found naturally in the cannabis plant. There are over 100 different cannabinoids identified so far, but the most well-known and studied are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — the main psychoactive component in cannabis responsible for that ‘high’ feeling — and cannabidiol (CBD) which is less of a psychoactive and studied for its therapeutic properties. Your endocannabinoid system regulates the most critical bodily functions such as learning, memory, sleep, pain and immune response. Small doses of CBD have been shown to increase endocannabinoid production and activation of the endocannabinoid system resulting in the reduction of pain, anxiety and stress.

A ratio product such as 1:1 CBD Ratio tincture or 20:1 Ratio tincture would be a good choice depending on the individual’s THC preference.

How do you recommend women consume cannabis to alleviate menopause symptoms (e.g. smoking, edibles, tinctures, etc.)?

CBD FECO (Full-spectrum Extract Cannabis Oil) is a great foundation. A CBD ratio product would also work. Additionally, a THC product of some type is recommended, but dosage will greatly depend on the individual’s tolerance and preferred experience.

What other complementary therapies or lifestyle changes do you recommend in conjunction with cannabis use during menopause?

Many are interested in cannabis for menopause because they are looking for natural ways to manage unpleasant symptoms. Natural therapies often work best with a holistic approach. We’d recommend a diet that is abundant in nutrient-dense greens (like kale, chard, or broccoli) and limits the consumption of processed foods that are often high in carbs or refined sugar. Working mindfulness practices that promote stress reduction (like mediation, yoga, massage, etc) into a daily routine can also help.

How does cannabis interact with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and other medications commonly used during menopause? Are there any risks or side effects?

The exact interactions are unknown. Cannabis suppresses hormone production but how this interacts with HRT has not been studied. To our knowledge, unique side effects of cannabis during menopause have not been reported.

Are there any ongoing studies or research being conducted on the use of cannabis for menopause symptoms, and if so, what are some promising findings so far?

Ongoing research is usually not published, and findings are usually not revealed until publication. Ultimately, more research is needed to fully understand the effects of cannabis on menopause symptoms, but there is enough evidence and anecdotal reporting to suggest potential benefits. The information that is available indicates that cannabis can be helpful but the results may vary between individuals.

We at Dockside are optimistic that research will eventually catch up to cannabis and uncover even more ways in which cannabis can improve the quality of life for women experiencing menopause.

Varietal Brewing x Dockside Cannabis Introduce “Nug Jug”

What is “Nug Jug”?

Dockside Cannabis teamed up with Varietal Brewing to create an exciting beer that celebrates the aroma of cannabis without actually containing any THC. This new beer is called “Nug Jug” and contains hops that have the same terpene profile, smell and taste as the well-known cannabis strain “Dutch Treat,” which boasts a hazy, eucalyptus aroma with fruity undertones.

Beer and Cannabis — how did this happen?

Back in the late nineties, Oscar, one of Dockside’s founders and Chris from Varietal Brewing were working in the Giant Sequoia forest of the Sierra Nevada outside of Fresno CA. Oscar andChris were tasked with the day-to-day administration of a summer camp program on a sun-dappled 80 acre lake. Throughout the next couple of years, they found themselves on various adventures together, exploring the coast and checking out all kinds of new places. A few years went by where these friends didn’t see each other, but as it goes with real friendships, time and space don’t really matter. Over the years, each of these friends developed an entrepreneurial streak, Chris was interested in starting a brewery, and Oscar had spent time developing a partnership with a couple of awesome people to open a medical cannabis dispensary in Seattle. Times and minds were changing;  Dockside Cannabis sprung to life when Washington became the first state to legalize adult-use.

Chris was over in Eastern, WA working on a business plan with his partners when Oscar offered to lend a hand as an advisor. Chris floated the idea of a weed-focused beer that contained no cannabis. Living and working in the heart of Yakima, the largest hop growing region in the world, Chris spent a lot of time doing sensory analysis with the great diversity of varieties. Chris’s idea was that the nuances of a weed strain could be replicated in a beer using hops, and that the perfect partner in a project like this, would be the people who know and smell these strains regularly.

So, on a sunny winter day in Sunnyside WA, members of the cast of Varietal Brewing and Dockside Cannabis joined forces and spent several hours smelling, describing, and discussing the aromatic qualities of both hops and cannabis. The teams landed on the strain they wanted to celebrate: Dutch Treat, due to its classic piney, resinous cannabis profile and punchy fruitiness. Playing with terpenes and thiols, the naturally aromatic organic compounds found in cannabis and hops respectively, they selected hop varieties known for their piney, citrus and tropical fruit characteristics mirroring the scent profile of Dutch Treat. After several trial batches, a hazy IPA was selected for the base, using a yeast hop strain that pushes fruit esters, and a malt base that would present dry but enough body to remain chewy. Nug Jug IPA is the result of 20+ years of friendship, cross industry collaboration and good people working together.

This brew is intended to be enjoyed while calling that friend that you haven’t heard from in a while. To friends near and far – Call them! Make some plans! Go have fun! Drink some beer and smoke some weed and get back to basics! Dockside and Varietal Brewing hope that this drink will appeal to both cannabis enthusiasts and beer lovers alike and that this collaboration is a testament to the growing acceptance of cannabis in mainstream culture.

Where can I get it?

Celebrate 4/20 and the release of Nug Jug by grabbing a pint at Brouwer’s or a can at Add-a-Ball Arcade  in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle. Not in Seattle? Visit Bill’s Tavern in Yakima, WA for a Nug Jug celebration!

The History of 420

Before the days of Google and Wikipedia, the origins of the term 420 were left mostly to the imaginations of stoners. Today the consensus is that the term originated in 1971 with five highschool students Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich in San Rafael, California. The group referred to themselves as “The Waldos” and according to most reports, would meet after school at 4:20 PM in front of a statue of Louis Pasteur to search for a cannabis crop that had been abandoned by a Coast Guard service member in the nearby woods. Whether or not they ever found it remains unclear, but they continued to meet up at the same time and place to consume cannabis. To avoid suspicion, they began using the code “420 Louis” (eventually shortened to “420”) to reference the meetings during school hours. Dave’s older brother was good friends with the Grateful Dead’s bassist Phil Lesh, and the term eventually ended up circulating among Bay Area Deadheads throughout the 70’s and 80’s and finally to cannabis enthusiasts around the world.

While that story’s mundane origins and supporting documents give it credibility, plenty of other theories have been suggested over the years. Here are a few of our favorites:

420 Chemicals in Cannabis

It’s impossible to say who thought up this clever interpretation of 420, but they were a little off in their calculations. Cannabis actually contains 483 known compounds, such as cannabinoids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and omega fatty acids.

A Song by Bob Dylan

The song Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 by America’s favorite mumbler is often cited as the origin of 420 due to the lyrics “everybody must get stoned” and the fact that 12 x 35 = 420. Coincidence? Probably.

Bob Marley’s Birth/Death

Given Bob Marley’s associations with weed, it’s not surprising that he found his way into this legend too. Unfortunately, he was born on February 6, 1945 and died on May 11, 1981. Sorry, Bob.

California’s 420 Penal Code

Many people have lit up in public parks over the years, but the misdemeanor offense of obstructing another person’s access to public land isn’t something you’ll often hear people talk about while passing a joint.

Jimmy Carter’s Rabbit Incident

On April 20, 1979, a swamp rabbit swam toward President Jimmy Carter’s fishing boat and was sensationalized by the media as an attack by a killer bunny. This event is obviously worthy of a holiday, but Carter’s 1973 UFO sighting smells much more like cannabis.

Ancient Aliens

Your dad’s favorite History Channel show, Ancient Aliens, premiered on April 20, 2010. Sure, 420 started years before, but like, did it really?

A Trip to the Cannabis Museum

At one time in American history, cannabis was legal. Before cannabis prohibition in 1937, you could even purchase a cannabis tincture at your local drug store, where most pharmacists made their own unique blends and variations! However, this exciting time for cannabis was short lived and despite the many benefits provided, cannabis was outlawed due to fear and ugly politics.

Only very recently, 1998 to be exact, was cannabis legalized for medical use in Washington state (in 2012, i-502 passed – allowing recreational use). With legalization, came a new opportunity to better understand cannabis, the endocannabinoid system, and how cannabinoids work to help us in unique ways.

The Dockside Cannabis Museum, located inside Dockside Cannabis SODO, hosts the Wirtshafter Collection of pre-prohibition era cannabis apothecary items. See the physical pieces of history in the delicately blown glass bottles that at one time housed cannabis tinctures once used to treat coughs, anxiety and even Parkinson’s.

Don E Wirtshafter, curator and collector of the The Wirtshafter Cannabis Museum Collection, has said in his Collector’s statement, “I kept hearing people claim that cannabis had never been accepted as a medicine in the United States. I set off to prove this wrong by collecting the remaining evidence of cannabis use not lost to seventy-five years of prohibition. Through good luck and good help, I found this proof in the bottles, containers and advertising that marked the first golden age of cannabis apothecary, 1850-1937.

The history of the use of cannabis as a valued medicine was not lost, it was purposefully hidden. Rarely has a subject been under such a strong taboo. Most museums and historical archives destroyed their cannabis accessions. The bottles in this collection were saved by a hidden network of controlled substance collectors. Mostly doctors and pharmacists, these specialty collectors keep their cabinets of curiosities private. They, alone, preserved this important piece of our history.

The collection has given us an understanding of how much the medical practitioners one hundred years ago knew about cannabis and its various uses. Healers knew cannabis from personal observation; they had no access to the scientific tools of today. A hundred years ago, these drugs were popular simply because they worked and were known to be safe. For sixty years running, cannabis was the third most used compound in medicine. Physicians of the day found it beneficial for a wide variety of indications; indications that match the claims being made by the proponents and patients of medical cannabis today.”

You can read up on this rare and highly curated collection at the Cannabis Museum website.

Curious about tinctures and dosing? Read our Q&A with Fairwinds Cannabis about ratios and dosing.

Read about the endocannabinoid system here in a journal from Harvard Medical School.

If you’re canna curious and want to figure out what strains work with your own body, keeping a strain diary is very helpful.

The Best Horror Movies to Watch High + Strain Pairing

It’s that time of year — spooky season! October is the best month to bust out a warm blanket, mix up an infused apple cider, burn that cardamom nut muffin candle, and light up with our horror movie inspired cannabis pairings! Our curated selection will have you screaming, laughing or just straight up vibing to some truly frightening flicks!

Classic Horror

These are the movies we kind of all know, even if we haven’t seen them. They play on our most basic and universally-shared fears— a haunted house, an inescapable terror, or a questioning of reality.

The Shining
Stephen King hated Kubrick’s take on his story. Nonetheless, it became Kubrick’s horror masterpiece— brilliant cinematography and directing that pushed actors to their absolute limit. And wouldn’t Lloyd the Bartender make an excellent
budtender?!

Don’t Look Now
This 1973 film, starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie is adapted from a story by Daphne du Maurier which explores the intersection of grief and madness set in a very creepy iteration of Venice. It’s more art-y than your standard horror film— but it’s deeply strange and European.

The Ring
Released as Ringu in Japan in 1998 and later adapted for US audiences in 2002, the images and tropes of The Ring spawned hundreds, if not thousands, of imitations and nightmares across the globe. A true classic of the modern era.

The Ring (2002)

What to Smoke With Classics
Let’s go with classic strains for this category—landraces, legacy strains, and the ones you’ve tried and should try again. They’re classics for a reason.

Try: Blue Dream from Sky High Gardens or Lazy Bee Gardens, AK-47 from Puffin Farm, Granddaddy Purple preroll from Dipped. Honorable mention is Red Runtz from Legit, but only for The Shining. Because c’mon.

New Favorite Horror

As our tastes in horror mature and effects become more sophisticated, so do our tastes in cannabis. It’s possible to enjoy the below movies with a wide variety of effect profiles and genetics, reflecting what’s new and great in both horror and cannabis.

Us
After Get Out and before Nope, Jordan Peele made Us. Full of jump scares, menacing silhouettes, flickering fluorescent lighting, and a twist that gets to the core of one of our most fundamental fears— ourselves. Us explores what we’re truly capable of doing.

It Follows
Michael Myers is only partly scary because he murders people. What makes him terrifying is his pace. He never runs. He just keeps coming— just like the “villain” in It Follows. With a modern take on STI communicability and a constant demand to keep scanning the background, this flick will keep your eyes wide open.

The Taking of Deborah Logan
What starts as a run-of-the-mill, found-footage horror film with turbulent ensemble scenes and characters whose only volume is YELLING eventually descends into one of the scariest possession films of the last 20 years. Be prepared for a freakishly disturbing conclusion that might haunt you for longer than you expect.

The Descent
The Final Girl takes on a whole new meaning in The Descent, a monster movie that takes place in an unexplored Appalachian cave system. But the cave system isn’t really unexplored, and the monsters are part of the colony that explored them first and never left.

What to Smoke with New Favorites:
Try: Garlotti from Hella Loud, Dutchberry from Artizen (also the winner of the 2022 Dockside Cup!), or a Princess Bubblegum vape cart from Treehaus. Honorable mentions include CBD-rich items like Cinderella 99 from Walden, the CBG blend vape cart from Heylo, or some Green Revolution 2:1 Chill Marionberry Doozies with CBN, especially if you need to calm down after some of the bigger scares.

The Descent (2005)

Funny Horror

Not all horror is scary! Horror already keeps us on alert for the next scare, which is why comedy horror is so much fun. The stakes are lower, the stunts are more enjoyable and there are still enough scares to keep them in the horror genre.

The Cabin in the Woods
Aka “What Else You Got?” No sub-genre is missed and no runestone unturned, in this delightfully noisy, chaotic ode to horror. Scholars and enthusiasts can unite and blaze together for this new classic that features just about every kind of gory death you can imagine.

Grabbers
A monster movie that takes place on an idyllic Irish isle sporting not much besides a pub, a lab, and a police station. Oh, and a bunch of alien tentacle monster eggs that are activated by water and allergic to alcohol and drunk people.

Housebound
This New Zealand film isn’t widely popular, but it’s a wryly funny movie built upon the premise of “something is very wrong here” with some family tension and house arrest thrown in for kicks.

What to Smoke With Funny Horror:
Strains for comedy horror films run the gamut, but mostly they’re great for kicking back and enjoying your time on the couch with one of your favorite horror movies.
Try: Laughing Gas from Sweetwater Farms, Mimosa from Saints, Alien Apple Cookies from Royal Tree, or Strawberry Banana Haze from Fire Bros. Honorable mention is Humboldt Royal Kush from LuvIt Farms, which is perfect for the stuck-out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere vibes of the Cabin in the Woods.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

Foreign Horror

Ok, it can be difficult to keep track of subtitles while you’re enjoying cannabis. But foreign horror is a great way to understand the cultural and societal fears in other countries, and some of the finest horror in the last ten years has come from overseas.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
Not technically foreign, but this American-produced, Persian-language film is set in Iran and shot in black and white, making starkly beautiful work of light and shadow. A vampire flick in the vein of the original Let the Right One In, this progresses almost like a dream and focuses on the titular Girl’s movements through the city and its inhabitants at night.

Train to Busan
One of the greatest action horror and one of the greatest zombie films of all time, Yeon Sang-ho’s Train to Busan never stops moving or slows down to offer the viewer respite. A zombie outbreak on a high-speed train paired with complex human dynamics and themes of self-sacrifice? Thank you, Korea!

Trollhunter
Shot mockumentary-style in Norway, where a group of students meets a hunter whose prey is a little bigger than the bears they think they’re tracking. Ancient Norse myths meet found footage and result in a dark, and darkly funny, option.

What to Smoke With Foreign Horror:
When selecting cannabis to pair with a foreign film, it’s important to choose strains that allow you to focus on the story, even if you don’t speak the language.
Try: Whistling Moon Traveler from Cascadia Gardens, Angela from K Savage, Powderhound from Lazy Bee Gardens or Dutch Haze from Raven Grass. Honorable mention is MAC 1 from Constellation Cannabis to match the dreamlike sequences of A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

Trollhunter (2010)

Independent Horror

Not every great horror film has to have a huge budget, and I’m not just talking about cheap slashers overflowing with corn syrup blood and latex limbs. Much like the production cost of the below films, you can choose cannabis that’s easier on your wallet.

The Nightmare
If you’ve ever experienced sleep paralysis, you’ll know exactly what The Nightmare is about. If you haven’t, you’ll get to discover it in this documentary, featuring interviews with real humans (not actors) who have experienced multiple types of the condition that appears across the world in various cultural guises. Enjoy your smoke sesh with the Hat Man!

Terrified
An Argentinian import, Terrified is…well, we aren’t actually sure, and that’s probably why it’s so scary. Suffering, loneliness, and the unknown act as magnets for fear. Also, there might be a parallel universe involved.

The Invitation
For introverts, dinner parties— especially dinner parties thrown by your ex— are scary enough. But throw in some weird interpersonal dynamics and a doomsday cult and this contained mystery unravels in some highly disturbing ways.

What to Smoke With Independent Horror
Try: Slymer from Walden, Gelato from Natural Mystic Farms, or a Zkittlez distillate vape cart from Double Delicious

The Nightmare (2015)
